Albertina was born on April 11th, 1919 to Johann Hermann and Elisabeth Schmöller with nine other siblings. She was baptized on May 25th, 1925, and was confirmed on March 9th, the same year. Three years later, on August 16th, she received Our Lord in the Eucharist. She described it as the most beautiful moment in her entire life. Albertina had a special devotion to Our Lady and St. Aloysius of Gonzaga. Her teachers would praise her morals and generous nature and when her siblings would tease or taunt her, she would not retaliate. On June 15th, 1931, Albertina went searching for a runaway bullock. She came across Maneco Palhoça, a boy who worked for her father, loading beans into a cart and asked him for directions. He pointed her in the wrong direction towards a wooded area. Albertina followed his directions and heard twigs cracking behind her. Expecting to see the bullock, Maneco surprised her. After a struggle, and realizing he would fail and be exposed by her, Maneco grabbed her hair and slit her throat. Maneco attempted to pin the murder on João Candinho, then fled but was soon apprehended as soon as people began to suspect him. Every time Maneco was taken near Albertina's corpse, blood gushed from her neck, incriminating him. He later confessed to two earlier murders, and after being tried and convicted, was given a life sentence. Maneco admitted to his fellow inmates he murdered her because she resisted him. Albertina Berkenbrock died in the same place as her birth, in São Luís, Imaruí, Santa Catarina, Brazil, at the age of twelve.
