Abanoub Al-Nahisy, whose name means "Father of Gold" in coptic, was a 4th century Christian and martyr. His parent cared for him in fear of God, they died when Abanoub was twelve. After their death, he joined the church and heard the priest asking the congregation to remain faithful as many of them were being persecuted
by Diocletian, the Roman emperor. He acquired
the Holy Sacraments, then prayed to God to lead
him to where he could confess his faith in Jesus. After returning to his house, he rose up right away and gave away all the gold, silver and other riches left to him by his father to the less fortunate. While walking along the river bank of
Samanoud, he saw the Archangel Michael, who informed him that he would suffer there. Abanoub confessed his faith to Lucianus, the governor there and proceeded to insult his idols. Lucianus was enraged by this and had him whipped and beat severely. Afterwards, the Archangel Michael healed him. The next day, Lucianus put Abanoub on a boat and sailed to a place called Athribis. As a punishment, he was hung upside down from the mast, and after the soldiers and the governor began to drink and dance, they repeatedly struck his mouth causing his nose to bleed. Suddenly, the soldiers with them on the boat were all struck blind, and Lucianus became paralyzed. They pleaded to Abanoub to pray for them and assured him they would become Christian. Abanuob told them, "
This will only happen in Athribis, so that everyone there should know that there is no other God but Christ". An a
ngel of the Lord came down from H
eaven, freed
Abanoub, and cleaned
the blood running down from his nose and mouth. Strong winds carried
them swiftly to Athribis. When they arrived,
the soldiers were healed, and they cast their uniforms in front of the ruler of Athribis. The governor became enraged
and demanded
that they all be executed
. Athribis's governor
tortured Abanoub severely, then had him transported
him to the city of Alexandria. He was only twelve years old when he was beheaded.
St. Julius El-Akfahsi, who dictated
the story
of Abanoub, was there
. He took Abanoub's body and transported
it with some of his followers
to Nehisa, Abanoub's home.
